About

A company named after a method.

Shu Ha Ri is a Japanese idea, borrowed from the martial arts and from craft, that describes how anyone gets good at anything. Learn the form. Break the form. Leave the form. We named the company after it because it is the honest description of what should happen to a person after they are hired, and almost nobody in recruitment stays long enough to see it.

Learn
the form

You follow the process exactly, without improvising, until it stops requiring thought. Most people skip this stage and spend years paying for it.

Break
the form

Now that the form is instinct, you can see where it is wrong. You start adapting it, and your results move past what the process alone could produce.

Leave
the form

The form is no longer something you follow. It is something you have absorbed, and can teach. This is where one person starts to lift everyone around them.

Why we exist

Most people are filtered out before they start.

Hiring has quietly become an exercise in sorting paperwork. A degree, the right previous employer, an unbroken run of years in exactly the right seat. Anyone whose route was less tidy gets removed by a filter before a person ever reads their name.

It is efficient, and it is wrong. The people who were not handed an easy route are frequently the ones who work hardest to keep an opportunity once they finally get one, and they sit in a pool almost nobody is competing for.

We built this company to hire from that pool deliberately, to place those people into companies where growth actually creates room above them, and to stay involved through the stage where a career is either made or quietly abandoned.

Potential is not a risk. Ignoring it is.

How far it travels

The method is not
industry specific.

Shu Ha Ri came out of craft and martial arts rather than commerce, which is exactly why it transfers. Every trade in existence has a form to learn first, a point at which you have earned the right to change it, and a stage where you become the person teaching it.

So we are not a specialist agency for one sector. We work across industries, because the thing we screen for, a willingness to learn something properly and keep going once it gets difficult, is identical everywhere. The subject matter changes. The progression does not.

What we hold to

Four things we
won't move on.

  • The advertisement tells the truthMisleading someone into an interview is not a clever tactic. It is a slower and more expensive way to fill a seat, and it is the main reason this industry is distrusted.
  • Nobody pays us to be placedOur fees come from the companies hiring, which is the only arrangement that keeps our advice to a candidate honest. The one exception on the candidate side is the optional Talent Pool, a dollar a month, priced in plain sight and never required for any role.
  • The company's spend is the company's spendAdvertising is passed through at cost. We take no margin on media, so we have no reason to recommend spending more than the results justify.
  • We say no to work we can't do wellTaking on more than we can serve properly would break the only thing this company actually sells.
